A Creative Couples Session That Turned into the Best Date Night

When Morgan signed up for one of my creative sessions—my “rain” session—I was so excited. The twist? There was no rain in sight. We made our own with a good old-fashioned garden hose. Yep, this was DIY rain at its finest, and it turned out to be one of my favorite sessions ever.

Before the session, I sent Morgan a quick reminder to bring a towel and a change of clothes because I knew they were going to get absolutely drenched. Well…she had already left the house by the time she saw it—and poor Cody didn’t pack either. Oops! But no worries—he dried off with a towel I had on hand (photographer/mom/backup planner always, right?).

Cody was definitely a little hesitant at first (and honestly, so was my assistant—AKA my husband Jennings). It was Jennings’ first time helping me with a session, and I had basically handed him a hose and said, “Soak these people!” He felt so bad at first—he’s too sweet for this job—but he quickly got into it, and so did Cody, once they saw how amazing everything looked coming together.

Morgan and Cody were magic in front of the camera. You could feel how in love they are—so playful, relaxed, and deeply connected. Morgan even told me this session was part of their date night, which absolutely melted my heart. That kind of trust and intention means everything to me.

Of course, we had Justin Bieber’s “Swag” album playing on repeat (Morgan’s request—and now I get it, it's a vibe). In just 30 minutes, we created so much joy, movement, and intimacy. Only one image in the whole gallery was traditionally posed—the rest? 100% prompted and real.

Here are just a few of the prompts I used to keep things fun and natural:

“Attack her with kisses!”

“Pretend you’re in your backyard and Cody grabs the hose and soaks you!”

“Look into each other’s eyes and think back to when you first met.”

“High School Musical moment—pick her up and spin in circles!”

“Play tag.”

“Pretend you’re birds.” (Yes, they went with it. Yes, it was adorable.)

Sessions like this remind me why I do what I do. It's not about perfect hair or posing—it’s about the feeling you get when you look back on the moment. It’s about the story you’re telling just by being yourselves.

I’m already counting down the days until I get to see Morgan and Cody again for their upcoming family session—but until then, I’ll be over here reliving the joy from this one.
